2011 Mission Trip Report

This summer a large group of the FRPC family went to Camp Johnsonburg for our second annual mission trip. Last year a much smaller group went and worked on some painting and wood splitting. This year due to our numbers and Jburg being more comfortable with the program we were able to accomplish much more. The group painted two large bath houses and three cabins, split firewood and hauled a large amount of wood chips far into the forest to be spread over a confidence course called “low ropes”.

The group which consisted of 13 youth, 4 adults and two children also participated in many fun camp activities including; archery, swimming daily, boating, high ropes and the leap of faith zip line. We also spent time in daily Bible studies, had daily journal writing assignments, times of discussion around fire pits and quiet prayer at the prayer labyrinth.

The week was a roaring success with Jburg staff repeatedly expressing how pleased they were with our work quality and quantity. The four leaders each worked along with the youth at a site each day as well as leading discussion times and supervising games/free time. This year we added two leaders which gave each of us some time to get away from the group and be alone. This was a tremendous blessing and greatly aided in our keeping up our energy level and calm approach to the natural stressors of such a trip. Due to the success of our two fundraisers we were able to cut the cost of this week from the $200 Jburg charged us to $100 per participant. This directly led to youth attending who wouldn’t have otherwise.

The youth were very well behaved with literally no behavior problems over the week. The worst thing we had to deal with was occasional excessive energy after midnight and a tendency to not listen to instructions, both of which are minor inconveniences in the grand scheme of things. They all worked very hard and were actually physically worn out at the end of the work day.   We are grateful to Camp Johnsonburg for making this type of mission trip possible, our church for supporting us officially and financially, individual donors of cash and supplies and the parent’s for trusting us with their young people.
