1st Sunday of Advent: HOPE

Hope is the thing
with feathers that
perches in the soul –
and sings the tunes
without the words –
and never stops at all.
Emily Dickinson

When hope’s fine
feathers are covered
with the soot of stress

and layered
with the fine dust of
accumulated fear

and when the
wings of the
soul are tired

from battling
the stormy
headwinds of grief

unable to light on the
dreamy perch once
thought so secure

there is nothing
to do but fall like Icarus
from the sky

into a Deeper
Hope born
of struggle

and hear the
angels sing
of the new birth
